Then there will be no launch of Windows 12 this year? Microsoft confirms that the big feature update in the fall will “usually” be called Windows 11.

Qualcomm knew exactly a week ago: Windows 12 would be released in the summer. This prediction can now most likely be thrown in the trash. Microsoft has released a first preview of the 24H2 update for Windows 11 in the Canary and Dev testing channel. Insiders in the Dev Channel are moving from the 2300 Series preview issues to the 2600 Series starting today.

An increase in build numbers has historically indicated the release of a new version. Microsoft is sticking with the name Windows 11 for the time being. We would also be surprised if Windows 12 had already been available before this year. In the early years of Windows, it was not unusual for Microsoft to release a new version every two to three years; for example, there was a gap of seven years between Windows 10 and Windows 11.

A postponement is not an adjustment

Nevertheless, for Windows observers it seems to be just a delay in execution: a preview with build 27545 recently appeared in Microsoft’s internal test channel. After the internal testing phase, a preview version will be pushed to the public Canary channel and then to the Dev channel. Insiders may get their first taste of Windows 12 this year, but it’s still too early for a stable release.

It would also be possible for Microsoft to put Windows 12 on hold until Windows 10 support expires so that it doesn’t have to juggle three Windows versions at the same time. Microsoft is struggling to get users from Windows 10 to Windows 11. Introducing a new version could only lead to further fragmentation of Windows clients.

New function

The Windows 11 24H2 does not have a new name, but the update will bring many new features. These are some of the new features that Microsoft is already testing:

  • sudo commands
  • Connect to Wi-Fi using a QR code
  • Support for 7-zip and TAR in Explorer
  • Scrollable quick settings
  • Secure print mode
  • Improved energy saving and speech intelligibility
  • New Copilot features and settings

With Windows 11 24H2, Microsoft continues the tradition of rolling out a major feature update for the operating system every fall. You can read more information in this blog.
