Windows 11 24H2 will be the next major version of Microsoft’s operating system. Considering that according to the latest information, Windows 12 will be delayed until 2025, when the end of the life cycle of Windows 10 is approaching, this version will become the biggest update for this year and perhaps the most complete since the launch of Windows. 11 due to the number of new features.
One of them appeared in the latest test version for Insiders. Microsoft calls it “Automatic Super Resolution” (ASR) and defines it as a function using artificial intelligence “to make supported games play more smoothly and with improved details”.
You are certainly familiar with this concept of super-resolution, generally defined as a set of techniques and algorithms designed to increase the spatial resolution of an image, as it is something we have already seen in the technologies that the major graphics chip manufacturers have. incorporated to improve your hardware, DLSS, FSR or XeSS.
However, a different operation awaits us here, because the technique it will use an NPU or other type of AI accelerator compatible with Microsoft APIs. The upscaling component of this ASR apparently uses AI to reconstruct details. Since the title says “supported games”, ASR may not work universally.
It should be said that it will work with software other than games, and is said to improve the quality of video captured by webcams in Universal Windows (UWP) applications such as Teams, Skype and Camera, using the capabilities of neural processing units. which already contain all modern processors with an offer of camera filters, background manipulation, noise filtering for the audio section and more. It should also work in multimedia players similar to established graphics technologies such as RTX Video or FidelityFX.
This feature is hidden in the latest Windows 11 24H2 trial, but it can be easily activated and tested using tools like ViveTool. It is located in the section System > Display > Graphics and can be activated with a simple button. Apps that support this will also have their own configuration.

We’ll have to try. It remains to be seen how it works and how its performance and image quality compare with technologies named AMD, Intel and especially NVIDIA, DLSS which works best in this matter. It must be said that in theory the green giant could support Automatic Super Resolution graphics that Microsoft proposes with the Tensor cores of its graphics cards.
