Temperatures in northwestern Europe are predicted to drop by 9-27 degrees within a few decades, while temperatures in the Southern Hemisphere are expected to rise significantly, altering global precipitation patterns and destroying ecosystems. Some scientists predict this will cause food and drinking water shortages around the world.

The AMOC is part of the complex system of global ocean currents that move currents of salty and warm water at various depths around the world, helping to regulate the Earth’s temperature, absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and maintain the water cycle. It was previously thought that the collapse of the AMOC could occur within a few centuries.

This is due to global warming, which is causing large amounts of freshwater to enter the North Atlantic through melting ice in Greenland, slowing circulation. Source
