As an example, the report shows an account with a blue checkmark that includes the name and profile photo of Hezbollah’s secretary general, Hassan Nasrallah. According to analysts, verification of this account means that Nasrallah provided an official ID and selfie to the social network X. This is done to prevent some users from impersonating others.
Two more accounts – Iranian news channel Press TV and Russian bank Tinkoff – held gold ticks worth $1,000 a month at the time of the investigation.
In total, TTR identified 28 blue-ticked accounts on social network X associated with individuals or organizations under US sanctions. Of these, 18 received approval after April 1, 2023, when the social network launched paid subscriptions. The other 10 are old, verified accounts that have to pay to maintain their checkmarks.
TTP added that hours after the report was published, social network X removed the tags and suspended the account of the Iran-backed Iraqi militia group Harakat An-Nujaba. Blue ticks on the accounts of Nasrallah and Yemen’s Houthi rebels were also removed.
As reported, in September last year, the European Commission published a study confirming that Elon Musk’s X platform (formerly Twitter) contributed to the spread of Russian propaganda about Russia’s war against Ukraine.
