Nvidia introduces the RTX 500 and 1000 Professional Ada Generation for laptops

Nvidia is showing two new GPUs tailored for lightweight and mobile workstations. The RTX 500 and RTX 1000 are both based on the Ada Lovelace architecture and belong to the end of the existing product range.

Nvidia is expanding its RTX Ada generation portfolio with two relatively entry-level GPUs for light workstations: the Nvidia RTX 500 and RTX 1000 Ada generations. The portfolio already includes five more powerful GPUs: the RTX 2000, 3000, 3500, 4000 and 5000. Nvidia’s vague naming ensures that the type number says nothing about the GPU generation (there is an Nvidia GeForce RTX 20 series, for example, but that has nothing to do with these GPUs). The denominator Ada generation is very important here.

The GPUs, of course, contain an NPU: Nvidia, like all other hardware manufacturers, must insist that its components are the very best for AI. Then of course there is the actual GPU part with CUDA and Tensor cores. With individually selected AI workflows, the RTX 1000 has a computing power of 193 tops and the RTX 500 has 154 tops. For comparison: the RTX 2000 can move 232 tops.

Specifications

If we focus on the graphics side, we see 2,048 CUDA cores for the RTX 500 and 2,560 CUDA cores for the RTX 1000. Again for comparison: the laptop version of the RTX 2000 Ada generation is content with 3,072 CUDA cores, top model RTX 5000 has 9,728. The RTX 500 also has 4 GB of GDDR6 on board, the RTX 1000 has 6 GB.

The RTX 500 in particular is an economical GPU. It has a TDP of 35 watts to a maximum of 60 watts. Laptop manufacturers can experiment with this, so the exact performance of a GPU depends on the laptop chassis and cooling. The RTX 1,000 can also work with a TDP of 35 watts, but is configurable up to 140 watts.

Nvidia has announced that laptops with the new GPUs will appear on store shelves in the spring.
