Chinese scientists have cloned for the first time Tibetan goats, which, along with yaks, horses and sheep, are an important commercial animal for residents of the high-altitude Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, but whose breed has become degenerate in recent years.

This was reported on People’s Daily’s own account Kh on the social networkAccording to Ukrinform.

In order to prevent the loss of animals important to the local economy, the government of Qinghai province, the administrative owner of the plateau, has been implementing a research program on the application of embryonic engineering technology on Tibetan yaks and goats since 2018.

The cloning program is expected to help select the best individuals of the Tibetan goat breed, preserve their population and increase the income of local farmers and herders.

As part of the research, experts selected four adults and used their cells to create clones. The result was two healthy cloned goats weighing about 3.5 kg each.

According to scientists, the successful cloning of the strongest and most adaptable individuals in high plateau conditions (4-5 thousand m above sea level) is a major breakthrough in the breeding technology of Tibetan goats and will help their breeding. Regain adaptability and prevent degeneration.

As reported, scientists in the US have successfully cloned a species of black-footed ferret that was considered endangered.
