At Mobile World Congress, VMware will demonstrate RANGPT: an AI bot that analyzes network data to provide insights into RAN performance and energy consumption.

Today, every company must have its own GPT assistant and VMware can now tick this off for itself. The software company is making a number of new announcements within its Telco Cloud as part of MWC. What stands out the most is RANGPT: a generative AI assistant for network operators. The tool was announced by Aira Technologies in mid-February and demonstrated for the first time at the trade fair in Barcelona.

Mobile networks generate large amounts of data that can be valuable for operators to improve the network experience and/or reduce maintenance costs. However, collecting and processing this data is a time-consuming complex. RANGPT will be briefly connected to your network to automate this data analysis.

AI in your network

At the VMware booth we get a quick demonstration of how RANGPT works. The name suggests that the tool is built on OpenAI’s GPT model, but VMware tells us that it could just as easily be built on a Meta, Google, or AWS model. RANGPT, like ChatGPT, works through a conversational interface. You can ask the tool specific questions about specific data from your network, such as energy consumption.

RANGPT can show this at a specific point in time, but can also, for example, show a trend over time and predict future energy consumption based on historical data. The output can contain text, graphics or tables, depending on what you as a user prefer. These analytics can help you identify performance issues in your network or take steps to reduce energy consumption.

A third part of RANGPT involves automation. The tool also allows you to generate software code to reduce the time to build network applications. This code can be manually tested before execution, but the tool is also strict with itself and will never run code in which it detects a possible error, an employee says during the demo.
