IBM announces new AI-enhanced versions of IBM FlashCore Module technology to help organizations detect and recover from ransomware faster.

Cyber attacks pose a major threat to businesses. The question is not if it will happen, but when. To help customers address this threat, IBM is announcing new AI-enhanced versions of IBM FlashCore Module (FCM) technology available in new IBM Storage FlashSystem products. The new version of IBM Storage Defender software helps organizations detect and combat ransomware faster. This technology is currently only available to business users.

Fourth generation FCM

Previous generations were able to scan data without compromising performance, but did not yet have advanced AI capabilities. The new fourth generation FCM technology is powered by AI. This new feature can do more than just detect threats. As described by IBM, “FCM works with Storage Defender to ensure end-to-end data resiliency for primary and secondary workloads with AI-powered sensors designed for earlier notification of cyber threats to help organizations respond faster That and of course the unwritten rule that you haven’t announced any technology today unless you also shouted “AI” somewhere.

High-end applications

The optimal use of these technologies is currently limited to high-end applications. Ultimately, everyday SSDs can be protected in this way, but currently FCM4 technology and associated software is only focused on business users who work with sensitive information.

In the security context, AI (or simply machine learning, which is what we’re probably talking about here) can play an important role in improving security for business users. With this new improvement, IBM shows that AI (or ML) can help detect, remove and repair ransomware faster.
