Scientists propose delivering ice from airplanes to fight global warming

In the magazine Science Developments A paper by US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and NASA researchers has been published, in which scientists propose a method to curb the increase in Earth’s warming. The decision does not eliminate the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but it could become one of the methods to prevent the constant increase in temperature on the planet’s surface.

Therefore, a temporary or auxiliary method of preventing climate change could be drying out the upper layers of the atmosphere. Technically it can be done now. For this, it is sufficient to distribute ice from aircraft at an altitude of 17 km, just below the stratosphere. Ice will cool the moist water vapor rising with air currents and turn it into precipitation.

Calculations showed that if 2 tons of ice were ejected every week, it would reduce the warming of the planet from the consequences associated with carbon dioxide emissions by about 5%. In fact, this is a very small impact on Earth’s climate; Therefore, the proposed method should be considered not as an alternative to maintaining the carbon emission rate, but as an opportunity to slow down destructive climate changes to some extent.

Scientists underline that they are merely proposing a concept to be discussed. How this will be implemented is undoubtedly subject to further analysis. Working in a laboratory is one thing, working outside is another. Something unexpected happened, so you can’t return it. For this reason, scientists who did not participate in the project were cautious about the proposal to intervene in global atmospheric processes. In addition, such issues need to be discussed at the UN or international expert organizations. The planet is our common home, no matter what, and it would be good to have an interdelegation decision on its regulation.
