Intel Core i9-14900KS, this is how turbo mode scales depending on the cores used

Some users They have already started accepting units Intel Core i9-14900KS, a very powerful processor, which, as we told you before, is a high-frequency version of the Intel Core i9-14900K. It has no other important differences compared to the mentioned chip, so we can expect a very slight improvement in performance.

These early deliveries of the Intel Core i9-14900KS have allowed new details to be discovered about its key specifications, including voltage scaling and turbo mode frequency, which reaches a maximum of 6.2 GHz, but only under certain conditions. This is something I have already explained to you on previous occasions, that the turbo mode of the processors lowers the frequency as the degree of core utilization increases.

The Intel Core i9-14900KS is located in the Raptor Lake Refresh series, has a configuration of 8 high-performance Raptor Cove cores, 16 high-performance Gracemont cores, which leaves us 24 cores and 32 threads thanks to HyperThreading in high-performance cores, it has 36 MB of L3 cache and 32 MB of L2 cache. Its base TDP is 150 watts, but it exceeds 253 watts in PL2 mode. The working frequency is up to 6.2 GHz in turbo mode.

Intel Core i9-14900KS: up to 6.2 GHz with 3 active cores

This is shown by the first performance tests carried out with this processor. Turbo mode can maintain 6.2 GHz with a maximum of three active P cores and from there it reduces the frequency depending on the number of occupied cores in total. If they are used all core high performance turbo mode increases to maximum 5.9GHz, This means that it is not able to sustain 6 GHz with all active cores.

As for high-performance cores, they can work a maximum of 4.6 GHz with three active cores and drops to 4.5 GHz with all active cores. These types of cores have always had noticeably lower frequencies, but in this case the values are very good, as they even exceed the maximum values of frequencies that other processors equipped with only high-performance cores, such as Intel Core i5, are able to achieve. -12400.

In order to achieve such high frequencies, the Intel Core i9-14900KS uses a high voltage, because we are talking about nothing more and nothing less than 1.5 volts. High voltages and high operating temperatures can accelerate the degradation of processor logic gates, so it makes sense that Intel fine-tuned the chip selection in this product to ensure good longevity and avoid stability issues.

The first tests that have been done with this CPU show that the default configuration is this processor causes some stability issues with certain games and applications. It seems that having a “Direct to Die” retention system will be necessary to get the most out of this processor. This includes replacing the traditional motherboard mounting system with a proprietary solution that is capable of significantly improving cooling.

The launch of the Intel Core i9-14900KS will take place on 13th Marchand its price is expected to hover around 780 euros, approximately. To optimally drive this processor, we will need a Z790 motherboard with a powerful and well-cooled VRM, as well as a power supply with enough power.
