Flemish people are increasingly using online services and providing platforms with personal data. Paradoxically, concerns about the security of personal data are increasing.
Imec’s digital meter shows that the Flemish population is increasingly turning to online services for various matters such as online shopping. Although they say they are quite satisfied with this, concerns about the security of their personal data are also increasing. Trust in organizations and the handling of their data is also decreasing. Additionally, artificial intelligence goes a step further and increases privacy concerns.
Personal Data
The more online platforms we use, the more we fill these platforms with (personal) data. The Imec report shows that Flemish people are concerned about this and want more control over their personal online data. Concern about what these platforms are doing with our data is also being fueled by rapid developments in artificial intelligence.
The Digimeter shows that seven out of ten Flemings feel they no longer have control over what happens to their personal data. Companies and their handling of data also play a role and 69 percent of Flemish people are bothered by the lack of transparency. Nearly nineteen percent agree that the government is transparent about what it does with their personal information.
Data protection and organizations
Overall, 56 percent are worried about their privacy. Increasing awareness about what happens to our personal data makes Flemings think twice before giving permission to applications to use their data (76 percent). In addition, three quarters of Flemish people would like to no longer be able to pass on certain types of data or even access them. Flemings are increasingly less inclined to share data with organizations, 27 percent are still okay with sharing data if there is something in return. To increase Flemish people’s sense of trust and control, higher-level innovations are needed, such as safes for personal data.
Imec Digimeter 2023 – data paradox
Cybersecurity seems to be becoming increasingly important for the Flemish population. This primarily concerns the security of online payments (35 percent) and phishing. 79 percent of Flemish people will struggle with at least one form of cyber insecurity in 2023.
