In a blog, Anthropic proudly announces Claude 3, the successor to Claude 2.1, released in November 2023. The Claude 3 family has three brothers: Haiku, Sonnet and Opus, the latter being the most intelligent of the three. Anthropic isn’t afraid to make big statements: Claude 3 Opus is not only its own showpiece, but also the most advanced LLM developed to date.
The smartest in the class
To support this claim, benchmarks are used. Anthropic claims its latest model outperforms GPT-4 and Google Gemini Ultra in several areas, from general knowledge to reasoning, math and code writing. Not limited to text, Claude 3 models can now also extract and analyze information from visual prompts such as images and graphics.

With Claude 3 Opus, the company is taking a big step toward every AI company’s wet dream: reaching the level of general intelligence. This means that AI is not just good at one specific task, but can perform multiple complex tasks at the same level as a human. To be clear, we haven’t reached this stage with Claude Opus 3 yet.
Count tokens
Claude 3 Opus is described by Anthropic as the best in class, but the Sonnet and Haiku versions are also better than its predecessor, Claude 2.1. You’ll respond up to two times faster and with greater accuracy, while the chances that Claude won’t want to answer your question are also significantly reduced. Anthropic sets a limit at 200,000 tokens, which is equivalent to 150,000 words, but in principle Claude 3 Opus can handle up to a million tokens, or 700,000 words.
Claude 3 Opus and Sonnet are now available via the public chatbot and developer APIs. The price of the Opus model is five times higher than Sonnet. The cheapest version of Haiku will be available soon. Anyone who wants to chat with Claude 3 Opus must take out a paid subscription, which costs twenty dollars per month.
It’s OpenAI’s turn
With the release of Claude 3, Anthropic is heating up the competition in the AI scene once again. After Google launched Gemini at the end of last year, we now have to wait for a countermove from OpenAI. There have been rumors for some time that OpenAI is working on GPT-5 training, but the company has not yet announced a date for when the new version might be released. OpenAI has made some minor improvements to ChatGPT, although the chatbot also exhibited strange behavior at times.
