AMD introduces the Spartan UltraScale+ FPGA family. Spartan is a sub-brand of FPGAs that AMD acquired with its acquisition of Xilinx. When producing the new chips, attention was paid to keeping costs low. AMD focuses primarily on edge applications, such as healthcare, energy or industrial.
The FPGAs support high I/Os (up to 572 I/Os) and can of course be flexibly integrated into various devices or systems. They work with 3.3 volts. AMD is building the Spartan UltraScale+ family with a combination of 28nm and 16nm process technology. AMD points out the built-in LPDDR5 memory and support for PCIe 4.0 (8x). The chip measures just one square centimeter and therefore has a small footprint.
Because of its position at the edge of the IT infrastructure, AMD provides the necessary security features. Each device with a Spartan UltraScale+ FPGA has a unique fingerprint and supports advanced (post-quantum) encryption.
Like the other FPGAs in AMD’s (ex-Xilinx) portfolio, the Spartal UltraScale+ FPGAs are supported by the VIvado Design Suite and the Vitis Unified Software platform. Although AMD is already introducing the Spartan UltraScale+ FPGAs worldwide, the chips will not be available until the first half of next year.
