Malwarebytes 5 is the new major version of the well-known computer security application. It is available in free and paid versions for all supported operating systems, Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and Chrome OS.

Malwarebytes 5 comes almost five years after the last major version (v4), although it must be said that development has never stopped and there have been many minor editions, updated in features and the mandatory virus base. As with its predecessor, the main change in the new version is a new user interface, significantly more modern, which also results in improved navigation and ease of use. The company explains this in the target “deliver a user-centric experience across all platforms”.

The new interface provides quick access to three main categories: Security, privacy on the Internet and a trusted advisor. Security is a core part of any antivirus, offering quick access to a malware scanner, detection history, and real-time protection. Online Privacy is a new section that deals with the VPN add-on service. It was launched in 2020 as a standalone service called Malwarebytes Privacy VPN. Only users of the Premium Plus version have access to it, and in any case, it can cooperate with other virtual private network services.

The only relatively new feature in the release is A trusted advisor. This “advisor” provides “Real-time statistics, easy-to-read protection scores and expert advice put you in control of your security and privacy”. This feature has been implemented since version 4.6, although it is now highlighted and all features are offered. Perhaps the most interesting is the protection status of the device, which the advisor will show when it scans the device at least once. Anti-malware has additional features such as Browser Guard, a free extension for Chrome, Edge and Firefox web browsers.

Note that Malwarebytes can act as only antivirus in the system or together with others as an additional layer of security. For example, on Windows systems, you can keep Microsoft Defender as the default security solution even if you install Malwarebytes. Everything is easily managed in the general settings of the application. Another setting worth exploring is the option to scan for rootkits, detect mods and potentially unwanted items or alerts, which are mostly enabled by default.

The antimalware developers promise that the application is much faster in execution after the interface change, which is the latest feature of the version. Also in resource consumption, relatively light. Malwarebytes 5 (v. 5.0.17.99) is available on its website in free and commercial versions and for major desktop and mobile operating systems. The free version includes access to the Premium edition for a 14-day trial.
