HP is protecting its business PCs from quantum hacks with a new BIOS security chip

The new security chip found in every latest generation of HP business laptops is already resistant to future quantum attacks.

HP is going full speed ahead with its new business PCs and workstations by building a special BIOS security chip into each of these devices that is resistant to quantum attacks. The HP Endpoint Security Controller is a physically isolated microprocessor that protects the BIOS from hacks.

Such a security chip has been installed in HP business laptops for years to prevent malicious BIOS changes. Now, for the first time, such a chip is also resistant to quantum hacks. This is not happening today, but could become a reality in the (near) future. Since laptops last several years, HP is already moving up a gear.

You’ll find the chip in the new EliteBook G11 lineup, ProBook G11 devices, and new ZBook G11 workstations. Regardless of which configuration you choose, the new security chip is integrated into the device as standard.

Measure live PC usage

Along with the launch of the new laptops and quantum security chip, HP is also announcing a dashboard to measure your laptop’s consumption in real time. In the myHP app, you as a user can see how much your PC is consuming, as well as insights into your consumption over specific periods.

The app also gives users suggestions to reduce PC usage if needed.

HP processes all of this data into ProActive Insights for IT teams using this tool. The new IT Energy Dashboard shows the consumption of the entire laptop fleet. IT can then apply various filters such as geography and device type.

The new feature will be available to both users and IT teams starting May 2024. In this monitoring, HP emphasizes that it complies with GDPR rules and that the platform is certified for ISO27001, ISO27701, ISO27017 and SOC2 Type2.
