Apple vs EU

Longer than thirty days outside the EU? Then you will no longer be able to update iOS applications installed through a third-party app store.

Apple released iOS 17.4 this week. The update marks the beginning of a new chapter for the iOS ecosystem, at least in the European Union. Under the pressure of the DMA, Apple had to open the doors of its closed ecosystem a little. One of the innovations is to enable external app stores in iOS, so that users do not have to rely exclusively on the App Store. Mobivention is one such third-party app store that was launched immediately after the launch of iOS 17.4.

Despite the concessions, Apple continues to hold the reins. For example, users who want to use third-party app stores must comply with certain conditions. These apply especially to frequent travelers. To access these third-party app stores, your device’s final location must be in the European Union and you must also be physically present in this territory. Apple vows not to collect precise location data from devices.

If you travel outside the European Union, Apple limits support for externally installed applications. After a period of thirty days, it will no longer be possible to update applications that do not come from the App Store. Normally you can continue to use the applications, but installing a new version is only possible after you return from your trip.

Switch to Android

Allowing app stores and third-party payments is still a work in progress for Apple. In a document published by The Verge, the iPhone manufacturer explains future adjustments to iOS in the context of European legislation. During 2024, it would be possible to more easily remove pre-installed system applications such as the Safari browser.

From 2025, Apple promises to be less of an obstacle to the switch from iOS to Android. Switching between the two operating systems is still a complex matter. Google has launched one Switch to AndroidApp to welcome iOS users, but it doesn’t allow you to transfer all data from your iPhone. Now Apple promises to develop an application that will unlock all data.

The company is doing this not out of compassion, but because the DSA states that digital service providers must make it as easy as possible for customers to switch to other providers. Apple will take some time to comply with this rule.
