After a hacker attack, Edpnet has disabled its login systems. The company emphasizes that no data was stolen.
In a general mailing to customers, Edpnet announced that hackers had access to the telecom operator’s management systems. Edpnet emphasizes that it responded quickly to the cyber attack and that no data was stolen. All the facts are explained on the Edpnet report page. It does not appear that the telecom operator is providing preliminary updates.
All customer connectivity services work as usual. The only thing that is temporarily not working is the login system on “my edpnet”. The telecom operator will first restore the security of this service before bringing it back online. This is intended to prevent possible backdoors from hackers from causing damage.
Edpnet informs its customers that it additionally protects its systems against further threats. “We have launched an investigation, working with cybersecurity experts, to help us resolve the incident. The incident is currently under control and everyone involved has been informed.”
Edpnet supplies around 50,000 landline connections and 20,000 mobile connections. “We take the protection of personal data very seriously. Every effort is made to ensure maximum protection of customer data by installing increased protection measures.”
Proximus tried to acquire Edpnet for a sum of 20.5 million euros in early 2023, but the Belgian competition authority stopped this almost immediately. Edpnet was known in the Belgian telecommunications world as an independent party, not affiliated with any of the “big three”, and the authority preferred to keep it that way. At the end of 2023, Citymesh surprised with the takeover of Edpnet.
Third victim in a short time
Edpnet is the third major victim of hackers in a week. Last week the Duvel Moortgat breweries were hacked. The production of Duvel, La Chouffe and De Koninck was interrupted for a while due to a cyber attack. Maredsous and Liefmans were also affected. In addition to the certainty that there is an adequate supply of beer, the company can also rely on solid backup systems that allow it to be up and running again in just a few days.
Beyers Koffie and the glass manufacturer Sprimoglass in Liège were also victims of a cyber attack last week. It is not yet clear whether all the attacks are linked.
