Microsoft welcomes DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleyman as the new CEO of its AI team. Other Inflection AI employees are also on board.
Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of Google DeepMind, has taken over the position of CEO of the new AI division at Microsoft. In this role, he will oversee the development of Microsoft’s consumer AI products such as Copilot, Bing and Edge. Suleyman is co-founder of the startup Inflection AI and founded DeepMind a few years ago. Microsoft says it will use the new AI team to build on existing AI models. The company has a multi-billion dollar partnership with OpenAI and recently signed a deal with AI startup Mistral.
Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of Google DeepMind, announced his new role as CEO for Microsoft AI on X. Additionally, he will also assume the role of Executive Vice President of Microsoft AI and join the company’s leadership team, reporting directly to CEO Satya Nadella.
In addition to Suleyman, several other Inflection AI employees will also be moving to Microsoft, including co-founder Karén Simonyan, who will take on the role of chief scientist for the AI ​​consumer group. Kevin Scott remains chief technology officer and executive vice president of AI at Microsoft.
Mustafa Suleyman co-founded the AI ​​laboratory DeepMind in 2010, which was acquired by Google in 2014. According to a Bloomberg report, DeepMind is still a major AI force within Google, although Suleyman has been away since 2019 due to controversies surrounding some of his projects.
After he left DeepMind, Google announced that Suleyman had been hired as vice president of AI product management and AI policy. In 2022, Suleyman closed the door at Google behind him and became a co-founder of the startup Inflection AI with Reid Hoffman.
Building your own AI team within Microsoft does not mean that existing collaborations will end. Microsoft has a partnership with OpenAI and recently signed a deal with AI startup Mistral and says it will continue to build AI infrastructure based on its base models. Since launching Copilot last year, Microsoft has integrated its AI assistant into Office products, Windows 11 and Edge.
