Apple appears to be preparing to sell the refreshed Apple Watch Ultra 2 and Apple Watch Series 9 models on its US online store for the first time.
Apple recently added gray search filters for the Ultra 2 and Series 9 to its updated US desktop site; This suggests that it plans to sell updated models of these devices at some point. It’s unclear exactly when the rollout will begin, but this is a common move that Apple makes shortly before new updated models go on sale.
Like the new Ultra 2 and Series 9 models, which are currently sold directly by Apple in the US, the Blood Oxygen app is expected to be disabled on updated models due to a legal dispute with medical technology company Masimo. Last year, the US International Trade Commission (ITC) banned Apple from importing and selling Apple Watch models with a blood oxygen sensor, after ruling that the feature violated Masimo’s patents.
Apple stopped selling refurbished Apple Watch Series 7 and Series 8 models in the US after the ban went into effect because these models also offer the Blood Oxygen app.
It’s also possible that Apple and Masimo could reach an agreement that would allow the Blood Oxygen app to be enabled on devices before Apple starts selling refreshed Ultra 2 and Series 9 models. Otherwise, this feature may be re-enabled in a future watchOS software update if the legal dispute is resolved.
That’s why the first-generation Apple Watch Ultra was never available in the updated Apple Store in the US, but it was available in the UK, Ireland, China and Japan. Since the ITC decision only applies to the USA, the Blood Oxygen app continues to work on Apple Watch models sold in all other countries.
