Texas Governor Confirms He Will Continue to Arrest Migrants Despite Suspending SB4

Greg AbbottTexas governor said he would continue arrests of migrants and building a wall on the border with Mexico despite the suspension of the controversial SB4 immigration law.

“As long as the fight to enforce SB4 continues in the courts, Texas will continue to detain illegal immigrants for trespassing,” he said on social media X.

Abbott, a Republican, noted that state security forces have made more than 41,000 “criminal arrests.”

SB4 was passed by the Texas President in December 2023, but has not yet gone into effect due to a legal dispute.

Likewise, the governor of Texas said they are continuing to “construct the border wall, using the National Guard to install barbed wire and keep migrants away, and maintaining buoys on the (Bravo) River.”

Court again suspends law allowing migrants to be expelled from Texas

Late Tuesday, three judges on the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals suspended the controversial anti-immigration law just hours after the Supreme Court lifted an earlier blockade, for all practical purposes allowing state officials to implement it.

This law makes illegal entry into the state punishable by up to 180 days in jail and a fine of up to $2,000.

Returns were classified as a serious crime, punishable by two to 20 years in prison, depending on the migrant’s background.

Abbott challenges Biden

The measure is the latest attempt by Texas to challenge US President Joe Biden on immigration issues.

Abbott has ordered tens of thousands of migrants to be bused to Democratic-run cities such as Chicago and New York.

State authorities have installed a chain of giant buoys in the Rio Grande to prevent migrants from crossing into the United States.

Abbott has promoted other anti-immigration initiatives, such as installing kilometers of barbed wire at the busiest crossings or creating checkpoints. (According to Europa Press)
