Main opposition coalition VenezuelaThe Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD) nominated this Friday the historian Corina Joris as a candidate for the presidential elections of July 28, given the disqualification that prevents the anti-Chavista leader Maria Corina Machado from participating in the elections.

In statements to the press, Machado assured that the decision “arose from a discussion of unitary forces” and is part of an agreed upon mechanism to “overcome this hurdle” regarding his disqualification ratified in January by the Supreme Court (TSJ), a sanction it called “a void act, completely unconstitutional and cowardly.” .

In the meantime, he will continue to “travel throughout Venezuela” to bring “strength and hope to every corner of the country” while continuing to fight the disqualification that prevents competition in elections for public office until 2036.

“We have found the right person and (…) he is respected by everyone who has known him throughout his academic, professional and civic life,” Machado said, referring to Joris, who “she is not disqualified” as someone she “completely trusts.”

He accused the government of Nicolas Maduro about the desire to “close the road and the electoral route” in order to “deprive all Venezuelans of the path to change, to freedom in the world.”

In this sense, Machado argued that the majority opposition will receive an “antidote” “all the pitfalls” encountered on the way to the presidential election.

For her part, Joris said she felt “extremely committed to the people” of Venezuela and Machado, whom she thanked for “this act of trust,” and expressed her readiness moving toward a “pathway of transition in Venezuela.”
