Canva acquires Affinity to challenge Adobe

Online design tool Canva is acquiring Affinity, a creative software maker that competes with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and Indesign.

Canva is increasingly making a name for itself in the creative market and is making a name for itself alongside Adobe. The company does not yet have all the tools in-house, but it is taking an important step with the acquisition of Affinity. No amounts are mentioned in the notice. Bloomberg speaks of several hundred million British pounds.

The acquisition gives Canva three powerful tools: Affinity Designer, Photo and Publisher. These three applications on PC, Mac and iPad are the counterparts to Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign.

Canva announced earlier this year that it had 170 million monthly users worldwide.

“While we at Canva have focused heavily on the 99 percent of knowledge workers without design training over the last decade, we cannot ignore professional designers,” Canva said in a press release announcing the deal. “By collaborating with Affinity, we are excited to tap into the full spectrum of designers at every level and at every stage of the design process.”

According to Canva, affinity apps are used by three million users worldwide. This is a no-brainer compared to Adobe, but Affinity’s biggest advantage is that it doesn’t require a monthly subscription. With this, the brand has built a loyal base of professionals looking for an alternative to the Adobe stranglehold.

Canva co-owner Cameron Adams emphasizes in an interview that the Affinity applications remain separate from the Canva platform. “Small integrations are foreseeable in the future. “Our product teams have already begun discussions and we have some immediate plans for lightweight integration, but we believe the products themselves will always remain separate.”
