A new phishing attack convinces you to reset your password

Entrepreneur Parth Patel has become one of the victims of a new phishing attack. In a post on X, he explained that his iPhone and other Apple devices suddenly “started blowing up with password reset messages.” Since this is a system-level notification, it becomes impossible to use the device until you enter the passcode.

According to Patel, there were more than 100 requests to reset the Apple ID password. However, the attack did not end there. About 15 minutes later, the user received a call from someone who changed the official Apple Support phone number.

I was obviously still cautious, so I asked them to verify a bunch of information about me before answering any of their questions.

Pretending to work for Apple Support, the person provided some accurate personal information, such as email address, phone number, and current billing address, in an attempt to gain the victim’s trust.

Fortunately, Patel was able to confirm that the call was a scam after asking to verify his name. As it was later revealed, the fraudsters used People Data Labs’ data in real time to verify the information.

When Patel asked his name, the scammers said his name was “Anthony S.” said that.

Criminals I want to convince victims that something is wrong and they need to share the code Apple sent them to reset their passwords. Of course, if the victim shares this code with someone else, that person can gain full access to the Apple ID.

Other users who have received such requests say they are invariably followed by calls from a fake support service.

How do you protect yourself?

• This is less of a concern since password change requests are a system-level alert. But be sure “Do Not Allow” (Don’t Allow) was selected for all such requests. One way to exhaust victims is to bombard them with hundreds of demands, sometimes over several days. Keep selecting “Don’t allow”.
• It would be better if you see a request to change your password on the Internet close the page completelybecause any of the buttons can lead to a link to a malicious link if the malware’s developers put the wrong intended function under this button, that is, a link.
• Don’t answer phone calls even if the caller ID says “Apple Support” or similar. Scammers use call spoofing to make the incoming number appear to be an official Apple support number and verify personal information, giving the scam a legitimate appearance.
• Attackers then try to get your one-time password to take over your Apple account. Under no circumstances should you disclose your passwords or one-time codes to third parties.
• Finally, you can temporarily link a different phone number to your Apple ID, but doing so may affect iMessage and FaceTime.

What Apple said

Apple told 9to5Mac that it is aware of the issue and is “taking steps” to resolve it. However, it is not clear exactly what he does for this. So for now, you should be careful and not fall for scammers.
