Microsoft Edge has released a feature that can be interesting in several scenarios, and this is it RAM limiter integrated to prevent the browser from exceeding user-defined limits. The feature has not been officially announced, but was located in the Edge Canary channel and could be moved to the stable channel in future releases.
Current web browsers are the type of application that consumes a lot of computer resources, once they become the entire application platform. RAM memory consumption is particularly significant. The hottest among the big ones continues to be Google Chrome, a fee to pay to properly enjoy what is for many the best browser on the market in several sections, including performance. Google is trying to reduce the resources used with various tweaks, including a memory saving feature in 2023.
Microsoft Edge takes up a bit less resources, but it’s not one-handed either. The RAM limiter will be located in “Browser Basics” panel, along with safe browsing and power saving tools. Its operation will be very simple: click on the panel icon, Select the maximum amount of RAM Edge should use and continue using the browser.
Edge is not the first browser to implement a RAM usage limiter, as Opera GX, for example, included it five years ago. In any case, it is noteworthy that the main browsers include this feature, especially the one that competes with the leader Google Chrome, which, as we said, already has its own optimizations.
We’ll have to see how that works out.. In Windows, it is the same system that is responsible for managing system resources, so the benefits of installing a RAM limiter in the browser itself are questionable. Windows should automatically allocate the appropriate amount of memory to each application, and in most cases the automatic process works well.
Of course, limiting the use of RAM memory, which is a basic part of every computer, may negatively affect browser performanceas Microsoft itself warns, and should only be activated on computers with a limited amount of memory or when the user wants all the resources for the same task, such as playing video games.
