Ukraine is not a priority for hackers from China and North Korea – SBU

Since Ukraine is not a priority issue for Chinese and North Korean hackers, they do not conduct their operations there.

Ilya Vityuk, head of the SBU Cybersecurity Department, told about this in an interview with Ukrinform.

“Each of these countries has its own enemy. If we take North Korea, their main enemy is South Korea. Their main potential will be directed there. South Korea’s allies are the United States and other partners.

If we look at China, he will look at Japan, Taiwan, Australia, the USA… Ukraine is not a priority for either North Korea or China. That’s why they’re not interested in doing anything serious with us, they have a different orientation,” he said.

Vityuk noted that in order for foreign hackers to work with a country, they need to know the language and understand the mentality of the people, as well as examine the country’s infrastructure.

“There are two main ways to penetrate somewhere. The first is by exploiting the vulnerabilities of some system such as Windows or Linux. The second is the most popular – phishing, that is, send a letter to a conditional accountant to follow a link and you gain access to his computer, then tell the administrator Send a malicious file and then it already travels on the network. To do all this, it is necessary to know the language, the mentality, to specialize in that subject. And why? Should it be shared with Russia? This has no meaning for either China or North Korea, so hackers It is not here at the moment,” said the head of the SBU Cyber Security Department.

As reported, on December 12, 2023, the operator “Kyivstar” became the target of a powerful hacker attack, which led to a technical malfunction.

In the event of a hacker attack on the Kyivstar mobile communications operator, the SBU will announce suspicions against members of the SandWorm hacker group, as well as officials of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Russian General Staff. The case materials will then be sent to the International Criminal Court.
