Apple has dedicated teams investigating the development of personal robotics technology, which could potentially be one of the company’s “next big projects,” according to people familiar with the matter.
The company’s robotics-related projects are currently in a very early stage, but some developments are already known. We are specifically talking about a mobile robot that will perform home assistant functions. A desktop device that moves the screen and will likely be used to improve video calling service is also in development.
Robots developed by Apple can move on their own and use algorithms to navigate. In addition, some of the company’s engineers working on electric cars have now joined the robotics teams.
The robotics work is being done by Apple’s hardware engineering division and the artificial intelligence and machine learning group led by John Giannandrea, Matt Costello, and Brian Lynch (execs focused on home products who oversee hardware development).
However, Apple has not yet committed to any project and the work is still in the early stages of research.
