The Falcon 9 rocket took off from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California today at 07:25 local time (16:25 Kiev time) for the USSF-62 mission for the US Space Force.
Falcon 9’s first stage successfully returned to Earth 8 minutes after liftoff. According to SpaceX’s mission statement, this was the third launch and landing of that launch vehicle.
The mission will send the Weather System Tracking Microwave (WSF-M) satellite into low Earth orbit.
WSF-M is a next-generation space satellite that will “provide critical and useful weather information for military operations across all domains of warfare,” according to BAE Systems, which designed and built the satellite.
The advanced satellite’s primary instrument is a microwave thermal imager that will measure sea surface winds, tropical cyclone strength and collect other data. WSF-M will also fly a space weather sensor provided by the US government.
South Korea on Sunday launched its second domestic military reconnaissance satellite into space with the help of the United States, Ukrinform reported.
