In its statement, the International Court of Justice detailed that Mexico filed the complaint this Thursday, which was accompanied by a request for the Court to impose a number of provisional measures while it makes a final decision in the case.

The measures requested from the International Court of Justice are that the Government of Ecuador take appropriate measures to ensure the protection and security of the diplomatic headquarters, their assets and archives, preventing any form of intrusion against them.

Likewise, Ecuador allows the Mexican government to vacate diplomatic premises and private residences of diplomatic agents.

And also to ensure that no action is taken that may prejudice the rights of Mexico with respect to any decision that the Court may make on the merits of the controversy.

In addition, Mexico demanded that Ecuador refrain from any action or behavior that could aggravate or widen the case.

According to the rules of the Court, “the request for the indication of provisional measures will have priority over all matters,” the International Court of Justice noted.

Similarly, the Mexican government, in a complaint filed with the International Court of Justice, sought the suspension of Ecuador’s membership in the United Nations (UN) for violating the rules of its embassy in Quito.

The complaint calls for Mexico to “suspension of Ecuador’s membership in the United Nations until a public apology acknowledging violations of fundamental principles and norms of international law is made,” Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena said.
