Google has started rolling out the first beta version of Android 15, which can be downloaded on Pixel devices enrolled in the Android beta testing program. This follows two Developer Preview releases released in February and March, which offered developers the chance to test their apps on the upcoming iteration of the operating system.

While the core feature reveal will likely be reserved for Google I/O next month, the beta 1 update focuses on laying the groundwork for improvements in a few key areas.

Android 15 Beta 1 features

One of the biggest changes in Android 15 beta 1 relates to optimizing apps for larger screens. Apps built for the new operating system will automatically display in an end-to-end format by default, eliminating the need for developers to implement additional code to make the most of the display.

The update also prioritizes accessibility by introducing Braille display support in the TalkBack screen reader. This will allow visually impaired users to connect braille displays via USB or Bluetooth.

Android 15 Beta 1 introduces an OS-level feature to archive and decompress apps to help manage storage space. Users can now archive apps that are not used frequently, thus saving space while saving app data for seamless reactivation later. Security has been increased by implementing an API for end-to-end encryption of person keys. It allows users to securely manage and verify others’ contact information.

Availability and installation

The Android 15 Beta 1 update is compatible with Pixel devices from Pixel 6 to Pixel 8 Pro, including Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet. However, Pixel 5a will not receive the update as it will end its lifecycle later this year.

There are two main ways to install an update:

• Android beta testing program. Enrollment in the Android Beta Program allows users to receive over-the-air (OTA) updates after registration. This is the most convenient way to try the latest version of Android.
• Manual installation: Users looking for a more technical approach can opt for manual installation by flashing factory images or OTA files.

Those already enrolled in the Android 15 Developer Preview program should already receive the Beta 1 OTA update. Additionally, users currently participating in QPR’s Android 14 beta program can update directly to Android 15 Beta 1 without having to wipe their devices.
