International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor Karim Khan pointed out that modern technologies that help protect the crime scene play an important role in the investigation of war crimes, especially in Ukraine.

He said this during a meeting with journalists at the International Criminal Court in The Hague on Thursday evening, Ukrinform correspondent reported.

“For example, the team is already using 3D laser scanning and 3D crime scene mapping so you can record crime scenes, because different courts, not just the ICC, may not have access to the areas. Also, there is always a recovery after a conflict, so there is no other way to hold the crime scene. That’s one reason,” he said.

He noted that this method also helped to understand the statements of the witnesses regarding the direction of the fire.

Khan stressed that the investigation must use technology, artificial intelligence, everything possible to ensure that there is irrefutable evidence.

According to him, having different tools for obtaining and storing evidence is very important because it helps to gather all the evidence together and analyze it later, to delve deeper into certain details and to see how the evidence relates to each other.

“Some may come from Ukraine, some from neighboring countries, some from our own independent investigations,” the prosecutor said.

As Ukrinform reported, Estonia, Latvia and Slovakia joined the Joint Investigation Group to investigate the Russian Federation’s war crimes in Ukraine.
