Japanese private company Astroscale has published the world’s first image of space debris taken by a satellite as a result of the approach. As planned, the Active Debris Removal by Astroscale-Japan (ADRAS-J) spacecraft approached the rocket’s abandoned upper stage and photographed it from several hundred meters away.

The space debris photographed by the Japanese spacecraft is the stage portion of the H-2A rocket that Japan launched in 2009. Then this rocket launched into orbit the apparatus of the Canadian satellite operator Telesat. According to Astroscale, ADRAS-J made the world’s first attempt to safely rendezvous and investigate large space debris using RPO (Rendezvous and Proximity Operations) technology.

The Japanese company believes that the data obtained is vital for the next mission to remove space debris from orbit. The new active debris removal vehicle, ADRAS-J2, is expected to safely approach the rocket’s body, take additional images, and then remove this piece of debris from orbit using a robotic arm. This phase of the program should start in 2026, as stated on the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) website.
