Immersion cooling is intended to keep the chips of the future cool. Intel wants to be able to cool 2,000 watt chips by 2030 and is working with ExxonMobil to achieve this.

Intel and ExxonMobil announce a partnership to cool the chips of the future. Both parties want to develop and certify next-generation, energy-efficient, liquid-based cooling technologies. Intel is pushing ahead with liquid cooling because it wants to bring a 2,000-watt Xeon chip onto the market by 2030 at the latest.

ExxonMobil is known as an oil giant, but the company is also one of the most important players in the chemical sector. The company specializes, among other things, in the production of liquids for immersion cooling, in which the entire server is immersed in the liquid. ExxonMobil is fully committed to its PFAS-free solutions.

The aim of the collaboration is to achieve “significant water and energy savings” through immersion cooling. ExxonMobil’s dielectric fluids are designed to provide superior cooling performance compared to traditional water cooling systems. They would also extend the lifespan of the hardware and reduce costs, according to the manufacturer.

Immersion cooling increases rack density and reduces water and energy consumption. ExxonMobil seems ready for the challenge, now Intel still has to deliver the famous 2,000 watt Xeon chip.

Last year, Intel, in collaboration with Submer, already implemented a test case for cooling 800-watt Xeon chips (presumably Intel Sapphire Rapids).
