The iPad Pro is now available in 11-inch and 13-inch versions and will feature an OLED screen for the first time. The new models are wafer-thin, but again cost more than the previous generation.
The best iPad models from Apple are known as iPad Pro. Always the latest and greatest specs, but after a major redesign in early 2021 and an expensive refresh at the end of 2022, things remained quiet for a long time. Until now, because Apple presented the new generation at its “Pencil” event.
The most important innovation is undoubtedly the OLED screen, which replaces the mini-LED screen as a screen technology. The latter was able to achieve a very high maximum brightness of 1,000 nits across the entire screen and 1,600 nits peak in HDR. Apple states that the OLED variant achieves the same values. This is great because OLED is usually significantly less bright than mini-LED on such a surface.
Thin, thinner, thinnest: The 13-inch model is just 5.1 mm thick, the 11-inch model is 5.3 millimeters. You can choose between two screen options: the traditional glossy finish or a matte nano-texture to reduce reflections. The latter is only available in the 1 TB and 2 TB variants and costs 130 euros more than the standard glass.
Apple dispenses with the M3 chip on the iPad Pro and suddenly introduces the new M4 chip. According to them, the chip is 50 percent faster than the M2 chip in the previous generation iPad Pro. What it is based on is less clear.
According to Apple, the M4 chip delivers the same performance as the M2 chip with half the power consumption. This is likely due to the smaller chip manufacturing process (5 nanometers vs. 3 nanometers).
It remains to be seen what influence the thinner housing has on the speaker quality (four speakers again). Apple doesn’t say a word about it. The USB-C port is Thunderbolt 4 compatible for fast data transfer.
A new design also means a new Magic Keyboard. It is receiving an update with a row of function keys, but also a price increase with a new recommended retail price of 399 euros.
The new iPad Pro models are available now and will ship from May 15th. The price is increased again, this time by 150 euros for the 11-inch model and 100 euros for the 13-inch model. However, you get more base storage: 256GB instead of 128GB.
The base model of the 11-inch iPad Pro starts at 1,219 euros (256 GB) and goes up to 2,429 euros (2 TB). The 13-inch version starts at 1,569 euros (256 GB) and goes up to 2,779 euros (2 TB). If you want the 5G option, you have to pay an extra 250 euros. Both models are available in silver and anthracite.
