VMware, a subsidiary of Broadcom, makes Workstation Pro and Fusion Pro available free for personal use.

VMware makes a concession to users by making the Workstation Pro and Fusion Pro available for free for personal use, which is no different than the paid variant. Since Broadcom took over VMware, the virtualization specialist’s portfolio has been severely trimmed. Users who want the free version must register for it.

Personal use

VMware provides Workstation Pro and Fusion Pro virtualization software free for personal use. The Pro apps will be available under two licensing models: a “free personal use” subscription or a “paid commercial use” subscription for organizations. Workstation Pro is intended for running a virtual machine on Linux or Windows, while Fusion Pro is available for Mac systems with Intel CPUs or Apple’s own processors.

Take over

Broadcom’s acquisition of VMware was a major undertaking and VMware’s offering was severely cut, causing dissatisfaction among professional customers. VMware’s portfolio has been simplified into two categories: Cloud Foundation and vSphere Foundation. Both categories can be supplemented with extras for storage, security and the recently announced private AI offering.

By offering Workstation Pro and Fustion Pro for free to home users, the company seems like it wants to make a concession to users.
