Recently, the world’s first quantum computer and traditional supercomputer hybrid emerged at the Pawsey Supercomputing Research Center in Perth, Western Australia. The room temperature quantum processor, developed by the German-Australian Quantum Brilliance company, was installed in one of the racks and connected to the internal systems of the new supercomputer HPE Cray Ex Setonix.

Quantum computers have a huge advantage and potential over traditional computers by using the amazing principles and laws of quantum mechanics. Quantum bits can perform computations in parallel and very quickly, as qubits can be in a state called a quantum superposition state, or in several states at once, and instantaneously transferring data from qubit to qubit using confusion of quantum phenomena.

The main problem with most current quantum computing systems is that they use elements made of superconducting materials that operate at temperatures close to absolute zero as qubits. The need for such deep cooling adds enormous sums to the cost of computer systems and the cost of the energy they consume.

However, Quantum Brilliance has succeeded in developing and producing a quantum processor that can operate at room temperature. The qubits of this processor are based on so-called nitrogen vacancies, which are artificially created defects in the crystal lattice of synthetic diamond. Such qubits are less sensitive to temperature changes and mechanical fluctuations. And protection against external electromagnetic emissions is quite easily achieved using conventional methods, including shielding.

The Setonix supercomputer, which receives Quantum Brilliance’s quantum coprocessor, will initially be used to test and determine the key benefits of hybrid computing systems. And then some tasks will be transferred to the shoulders of the quantum processor, in which this processor can fully demonstrate a number of unique advantages.
