The Auto Red Bug, a rare electric car produced by the Automotive Electric Service Corporation in 1924, is up for sale on eBay. The car is built on a wooden platform, which plays the role of power frame and performs shock absorber functions. The car has no suspension as such, and the unevenness of the road is partially dampened by the bends of the wood.
100 years ago this car was very popular because it was quiet, had no exhaust, required no maintenance, and was easy to drive because it had no gearbox. The Auto Red Bug was priced at $125, while the Ford Model T started at $290.
The car received an electric motor fixed in the stern and rotating one wheel. The batteries were located in a box behind the seats. Interestingly, the Auto Red Bug used a motor similar to what some ICE cars of the period used as starters.
The seller claims that the car offered for sale is not only in working order, but also has won awards in rare competitions.
