Lightning strikes police school in Colombia: 28 injured

At least 28 cadets were injured this Sunday after lightning struck the Carabinieri police school in the Colombian city of Manizales (center) while they were training outdoors.

Manizales risk management director Diego Armando Rivera told local media that the electric shock affected people at the Alejandro Gutiérrez Carabineros school.

“As soon as we received the notification, we sent ambulances (…) and they told us that 28 of the injured students, two of them assistants, had undergone medical examination,” the official told local media.

The victims were transferred to the Manizales Polyclinic, administrative center of the department of Caldas, for medical examination. “So far, none of them have required transfer to another medical center,” Rivera explained.

The main symptom that the victims showed was stunning due to exposure to electric current.

This case is reminiscent of what happened in May 2022, when at least 19 students from the Colombian Army Cadet School in the municipality of Tolemaida (center) were injured when objects were struck by lightning.

The students were conducting tactical exercises in a sector known as Mesa Baja, at the military fort of Tolemaida, where they were surprised by a natural electrical discharge. EFE
