Nutanix introduces the Nutanix Kubernetes platform. This platform enables companies to manage their containers via a central interface on-premises and in the cloud. It is no coincidence that the openness of the solution is a hobby horse.
Nutanix is introducing the Nutanix Kubernetes Platform (NKP) at its .Next conference in Barcelona. NKP helps companies manage their container applications through a central interface, both on-premises and in the cloud. The platform provides a unified interface for hybrid multi-cloud environments. NKP of course works in Nutanix environments, but can also handle container management via cloud-based services such as EKS and AKS.
Open source basis
NKP is based on a pure upstream CNCF-compatible version of Kubernetes, not a fork. Nutanix emphasizes the flexibility this brings. NKP is a Nutanix solution, but the containers you manage with it do not receive a unique Nutanix bow in any way. This means that there is no vendor lock-in for NKP customers at the container application level.
This is an important asset. Nutanix has experienced unprecedented momentum since competitor VMware appears to be trying everything to annoy customers after its takeover by Broadcom. Today, VMware customers face huge bills but cannot suddenly migrate due to their dependence on the VMware stack. With its focus on openness and support for open source Kubernetes, Nutanix indicates that such scenarios are not a problem for customers.
Of course, NKP integrates seamlessly into the Nutanix ecosystem. The company also points out the automation capabilities covered by an AI sauce. Deployment, security, monitoring and upgrades are automated and with minimal human intervention.
The entire solution is based on a centralized management interface with a single central dashboard from which administrators can review their entire environment.
Three flavors
Nutanix offers NKP in three flavors. This is another swipe at VMware, which has relied on an all-or-nothing model since taking over VMware. Every Level is aimed at a certain level of maturity.
NKP Starter is integrated into the Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure and replaces the Nutanix Kubernetes Engine. NKP Pro bridges the gap to cloud-native environments and NKP Ultimate has fleet management capabilities.
Project Beacon
NKP is part of Project Beacon. Nutanix announced this project last year. With Project Beacon, the company aims to enable its customers to run their workloads where they want and move them around as they wish. To this end, Nutanix is working on a portfolio of solutions based on open standards such as NKP.
