The release of Stellar Blade was accompanied an important dispute which reminded me in part of what happened with the brilliant Bayonetta back then, although in this case the controversy was not as intense, probably because the social situation in 2009 was not the same as in 2024. Both controversies revolved around the sexualization of its protagonists.
Sexualizing characters in games is nothing new, it is a popular resource and widely used by developers almost since the birth of video gamesbut with the transformation that society has experienced in the last two decades and the increase in popularity of this form of entertainment, it is becoming an increasingly complicated matter.
The fact is that this controversy ultimately ended in favor of Stellar Blade. Many have defended the concept of the game for freedom and the fact that It’s just a game after all. I agree, demonizing a game because its protagonist is curvy is absolutely ridiculous, It would be like censoring He-Man because he has a lot of muscles and is wearing a loincloth. Creative freedom, gentlemen.
Stellar Blade became a mass phenomenon and its sales were so good that ShiftUp, the studio in charge of its development, with regards to the development of the sequel and the PC version. That’s good news, but we have to keep in mind that it’s not a firm commitment yet, and if they were to start work right now, it would take at least a few months to release the PC version.
