The rollout of Google’s new AI-based search experience has been rocky, with the search engine making questionable suggestions to users, such as how to apply glue to your pizza.

Google gave its popular search engine an AI injection during the last I/O edition. A new user experience with narrative answers in addition to the classic search results is being tested in the US. The rollout is not going entirely smoothly, as users are seeing very strange answers.

The utter nonsense that Google Search spits out is obviously generating a lot of entertainment on social media. From putting glue on a pizza to eating a brick every morning, information that users see is questionable to say the least. The AI tool seems to randomly collect information from the internet without critically analyzing the reliability of the source.

Google employees are currently busy removing the most idiotic answers and the AI summary feature has been temporarily disabled for certain search queries.

History repeats itself

This is far from the first time that something has gone wrong with the launch of new generative AI services from Google. Bard completely failed at its launch and its successor Gemini also made a negative impression with historically inaccurate image generation. Increasing competition from Microsoft and OpenAI, which is also rumored to be working on a search engine, is putting pressure on Google’s position and causing the tech giant to make costly mistakes.

Still, the launch of Google AI Overview cannot be said to be rushed or urgent. Google already announced during I/O 2023 that it would add a layer of generative AI to its search engine. Therefore, the search engine was worked on for a year before it was made publicly available. Above all, it shows that LLMs are still fickle and we need to look critically at AI-generated results.

The AI-powered search experience in Google Search is currently only available in the US. Google plans to roll this out globally later this year. Hopefully the quality of answers will have improved by then.
