Synology GS6200 is the first device to run GSM (Grid Station Manager). The device is designed for rapidly growing unstructured data within organizations.

To keep up with the ever-increasing amount of data in SMBs and companies, Synology is launching a new series: GS. The first device in the new product range is the Synology GS6200. This 2U rack server has 32 GB RAM on board and an AMD Epyc 7232P. You configure the storage yourself.

In total, you can create clusters of up to 96 nodes, which equates to more than 20 PB of raw data per cluster. You need at least three GS6200 devices to form a cluster. Each time you connect another device, capacity and processing power scale simultaneously. Synology Drive supports up to 150,000 different users on a maximum scaled cluster of 96 nodes.

In addition to Synology Drive, the GS series also supports SMB, NFS and S3 as protocols.

With the new device, Synology is adding a second operating system for network storage alongside the well-known DSM (DiskStation Manager) platform for the first time: GSM (Grid Station Manager). This is a more focused version of DSM without all the distractions of a traditional NAS that are not present when working with raw data.

High availability

Since every Synology GS6200 is identical in hardware, you can also rely on things like load balancing and automatic failover. If a host fails, the end user won’t notice. Each node can continue to provide the same services.

To update an entire cluster, you can work on each node individually. Thanks to rolling updates, the system never goes offline and you no longer have to postpone updates. You should never do something like that, but here it has no impact on availability.

Currently, details on the Synology DS6200 are sketchy. The product will not be available until the first half of next year. More information is expected to be provided later this year as the launch draws closer.
