All the secret codes you can use on Waze from your Android mobile

If there’s one app that’s a must-have when I’m driving, it’s Waze: I prefer it to Google Maps (the official Android app), both in the app version and integrated into Android Auto. Waze has much more detail than just adding the destination; There are some limitations, like avoiding tolls or notifying you of speed cameras… well, beyond just tricks, Waze hides a set of secret codes that could completely change the app.

Some are quite useful and others may affect its operation; so it is better to be sure before writing them down. How to enter codes into Waze? Open the app and type this into the navigation box (it says “where are you going?”). In some cases the request is executed immediately, but in others the application needs to be restarted.

Waze codes

You can enter these codes at any time or just to try:

  • 2##2to enter or exit debug mode, i.e. debugger mode.
  • ##@cctts, one of the most interesting: clears the TTS cache; Ideal if the text-to-speech function is not working well. This will clear the cache and force the download from the server so that the latest version is available.
  • dbg@ttsEnables or disables debug mode for text-to-speech functionality.
  • ##@ttsenable or disable text-to-speech functionality (optional, do this from the app in ‘Settings’ > ‘Sound & audio’)
  • ##@asrenable or disable voice commands (you can also do this in settings)
  • ##@User nameshow your username in the popup (randomly assigned name if you are a guest)
  • ##@engchange the language to English (I tried typing ‘spa’ and it gave a connection error)
  • ##@hebchange the language to Hebrew (Waze comes from Israel)
  • ##@restorefav, reset your favorite places to zero. When I tried it, I got an error stating that my device was not connected to the internet.
  • ##@coordShows (or stops showing) the GPS coordinates of your location
  • ##@debug languageReplaces translated character strings such as ‘Home’ or ‘Work’ [OK]
  • ##@debug speedshows the speed limit of the section, regardless of the current speed (only works if you have speed limit enabled)
  • ##@rawgpsShows an additional icon with the current location (in yellow)
  • ##@trafficshows traffic lines on the route

Redeeming Waze codes is your responsibility

These codes should be used with caution due to the changes they produce; For example, when you encounter a problem, you go to Waze support and their team recommends one of them to you.

  • ##@provinceif the phone is using the wrong server this code allows you to change it (valid in Israel)
  • ##@usagesIf the phone is using the wrong server this code allows you to change it (valid in the US)
  • ##@otherIf the phone is using the wrong server, this code allows you to change it (valid for the rest of the world).
  • ##@resetappto reset the app and leave it as newly installed: delete favorites, account information… I tried and had to log in again.
