Little (to say the least) Microsoft could have imagined when Recall introduced Copilot+ as the star feature of the PC, which was nowhere near happening game changer As they say in the Anglo-Saxon world, they were actually opening doors reputation crisis which is probably the most popular in connection with the emergence of artificial intelligence-based features and services that we have been experiencing for about two years now.
Presented as a kind of photographic memory, a concept that Microsoft wanted to associate with the feature (which itself prompted comparisons to “The Grain” from The Entire History of You, the third episode of the first season of Black Mirror), but actually a concept that started to spread like an avalanche, when not even 24 hours had passed since its introduction, it was “Privacy Nightmare”which was unfortunately proven when its shortcomings were discovered.
Microsoft’s original plans were therefore Recall will be available in a preview version from June 18, the day the first Copilot+ computers were launched, and that this feature will also be enabled by default on all new systems. But thankfully last week we learned that they’ve reversed course on this and yesterday we learned that they’ve pulled the previous Insider version of Windows 11 that included it, and that they’re going to add a new section to System Configuration that will allow you to disable all generative features Microsoft AI. Three good reactions, in my opinion.
Well, it looks like Redmond has once again decided to play it safe, which is again something to celebrate. So as they posted, The download will not be generally available on Windows 11 ARM PCs starting June 18. Instead, the feature will be released a few weeks later for insiders only. And once all the necessary feedback has been gathered, it is said that it will be time to start offering it to all users with compatible computers.
So in a week we’ve gone from early deployment and activation by default to a much more relaxed evaluation, progressive deployment with a first phase for insiders, plus having to activate it for Recall to start gathering information. Without a doubt, we stand before us clear and unambiguous remedy, with a much more defensible stance. And of course I wonder what would have happened if they had behaved this way from the first moment.
