According to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the problem is related to faulty software that may prevent the rearview camera from displaying images correctly. While this is very annoying for any new vehicle owner who uses rearview cameras while parking, an inoperative rearview camera is also illegal under the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS).
The issue affects the 2021-2023 Chrysler Pacifica, 2021-2022 Dodge Durango, 2022-2023 Jeep Compass, Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, and 2021-2023 Grand Cherokees. Also included in the list are the 2022 Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500, as well as the 2022-2023 Promaster vans.
Fortunately for Stellantis customer service, the camera software can be updated over the air. In fact, according to Stellantis, more than 735,000 cars have already been updated, with a warning displayed on the car’s infotainment screen before downloading.
In all cases, owners of affected vehicles can search the VIN number on NHTSA.gov or call their local dealer for more information.
