VMware is simplifying its portfolio, as promised by Broadcom. However, the focus remains entirely on VMware Cloud Foundation.
After Broadcom took over VMware, Broadcom promised to simplify its portfolio. For the time being, this has mainly led to less flexibility, package sales and extreme license increases for almost all but the largest customers. Now VMware is actually announcing a structural simplification. The Register knows this.
In concrete terms, this means that customers can get through VCF import Combine separate deployments of vSphere, VSAN, and NSX so you can manage them as a single VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) deployment. This has benefits especially in terms of update policy. Whereas previously the three products were updated separately, they are now bundled once a month for all three products. This is designed to simplify management.
Kubernetes and ESXi
Somewhat surprisingly, Tanzu Kubernetes Grid is reversely decoupled from VCF. This also has to do with patching. Kubernetes has a much faster VCF lifecycle, so it makes more sense and is more convenient to update the Kubernetes Orchestrator separately from VCF. This way, users stay up to date with Kubernetes releases.
Finally, you can live patch the ESXi hypervisor. In other words, you no longer need to stop virtual machines managed by the hypervisor to deploy an update to the host. This is very useful and very necessary: the Xen hypervisor, for example, has been doing this trick since 2016.
Not for everyone
It is worth noting that the improvements again relate primarily to VCF and in particular to customers using the entire VMware Cloud portfolio. Under Broadcom, VMware’s focus has clearly shifted to the largest customers, covering the entire portfolio, and they will feel the benefits of these improvements.
After all, all other customers continue to struggle with significantly higher licensing costs and unwanted integrations. For them, Broadcom’s vision of simplicity is beside the point because they want to take exactly what they need without selling their soul to the entire VCF suite. This announcement changes nothing.
