Court Sets ‘Dangerous Precedent’ on Presidential Power: Biden

US President Joe Biden on Monday criticised a Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity that was seen as a victory for his election rival, former President Donald Trump, calling it a dangerous precedent that did a disservice to the American people.

This is a dangerous precedent, as the office’s power will no longer be limited by law.

In calm and measured remarks from the White House, Biden said the decision meant it was highly unlikely Trump would face trial before the Nov. 5 election for his role in trying to overturn the 2020 election.

Supreme Court of the United States definite On Monday, Trump cannot be held accountable for any actions within his constitutional powers as president, but he can be held accountable for private actions. It is a landmark ruling that for the first time recognizes any form of presidential immunity from prosecution.

“This nation was founded on the principle that in America there are no kings. Each of us is equal under the law. No one, no one, is above the law. Not even the President of the United States.”

He said Monday’s decision “has fundamentally changed the situation.”

Biden is running for re-election against Trump and has sharply criticized his rival’s handling of the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol by Trump supporters who believed his false claims that he had won the 2020 election.

“Now the man who sent that mob into the United States Capitol faces criminal penalties for what happened that day. “The American people deserve to be held accountable in court before the next election,” Biden said, referring to Trump being tried for his role in inciting the riot.

Biden, 81, made his first White House statement since his faltering debate performance against Trump last week sparked calls for him to step down as the Democratic Party’s standard-bearer in the election.

After his awkward delivery on the debate stage in Atlanta, his comments and behavior are being closely scrutinized for signs that he is ready to run for re-election and govern for another four years. (Reuters)
