Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said on Monday that he agreed to resume direct talks with the United States.
“Next Wednesday, negotiations will resume with the US government so that the agreements signed in Qatar are implemented. “Let these be public dialogues and without speculation,” the president said in his program, which is broadcast every Monday by the official channel Venezolana de Televisión.
TOHe added that two months ago he received “an offer from the US government to restore relations and dialogue.”
“After thinking about it, I agreed, and next Wednesday negotiations will resume with the United States government to implement the agreements signed in Qatar and restore the conditions of dialogue with respect (…) we are not going to be hidden,” the president added.
He said official negotiator and parliamentary president Jorge Rodriguez would attend the talks, but did not specify specific topics for discussion.
Dialogues with US delegates have been ongoing since March 2022, when high-ranking officials visited Caracas in a low-key manner.
These conversations resulted in the release of several Americans and Venezuelans imprisoned in Caracas, as well as the exchange of Maduro’s close associate Alex Saab, who was detained in the United States, for another group of detainees.
But after oil sanctions were reimposed last April, the government denounced the United States for violating Qatari agreements that covered issues such as elections and migration. (Reuters)
