Biden faces growing questions about his 2024 re-election bid after shaky debate results last week. fellow House Democrat publicly asked him to withdraw from the race on Tuesday.
At a campaign rally in McLean, Virginia, on Tuesday night, Biden acknowledged that debating former President Donald Trump, his Republican rival, It wasn’t the best.
“I didn’t have the best night, but the thing is, I wasn’t very smart,” Biden said at a campaign fundraiser. “I decided to travel around the world a couple of times, about 100 time zones… before… the debate.”
“I didn’t listen to my employees, I came back and I almost fell asleep on stage“, he said. “This is not an excuse, but an explanation.”
Biden visited France and Italy for two separate events over two weeks last month, flying overnight from the Group of Seven summit in Bari, Italy, to attend a fundraiser with former President Barack Obama in Los Angeles on June 15 before returning to Washington the next day.
He then spent six days at Camp David preparing for the June 27 debate.
White House officials blamed a cold for Biden’s poor debate performance. Biden made no mention of being sick during a fundraiser on Tuesday.
A new Reuters/Ipsos poll released Tuesday found that one in three Democrats believe Biden should end his reelection bid after the debates, but no prominent elected Democrat would do better than the incumbent in a hypothetical matchup with Trump.
A two-day poll showed that Trump, 78, and Biden, 81, each had the support of 40% of registered voters, suggesting the president has not lost ground since the debate. The election is on Nov. 5. (Reuters)
