Apple has removed several VPN services from its App Store on the orders of the Russian government. This makes it more difficult for Russians to circumvent state propaganda.
Apple has removed several popular VPN applications from the Russian App Store. The American company is doing this on behalf of the Russian Internet censorship service Roskomnadzor. Apple has notified affected VPN services by email, pointing out that the functionality they offer is illegal in Russia.
There is currently some confusion about which apps have disappeared and for what reason. Le VPN has already confirmed that it has been banned from the App Store and has sent an email to its Russian users to gain access.
In total, Apple is said to have removed 25 applications from the App Store at Russia’s request. It is noticeable that Apple is playing along with the Russian government. The abolition of VPN applications makes it more difficult to access information in Russian society, which is heavily influenced by propaganda.
Incomplete withdrawal
Officially, Apple has stopped sales in Russia in response to the war in Ukraine. In practice, iPhones are still available. Apple continues to offer services in Russia, such as Apple Music. The App Store is also still available and Apple seems to want to keep it that way. Responding to Roskomnadzor’s request is apparently part of this strategy.
