Samsung launches the BM1743: an SSD with a capacity of 61.44 TB. The SSD is equipped with seventh generation V-NAND QLC memory. Samsung offers read speeds of 7,200 MB/s and write speeds of up to 2,000 MB/s, both sequentially. Random Samsung specifies target speeds of 1.6 million 4K read commands and 11,000 4K write commands. The drive is compatible with PCIe 4.0/5.0 (4x).
Of course, it’s the capacity of this SSD that catches the eye. The BM1743 is designed for high-density storage and high-performance requirements, such as AI and analytics workloads. Samsung plans to provide the drive in U.2 format for PCIe4.0 and E3.S for PCIe 5.0. However, the capabilities of the latter interface are a bit over the top given the speed of the SSD.
An SSD with a capacity of more than 60 TB is not new, but it is rare. Solidigm and Western Digital are the only two parties with an alternative on the market.
